Deep fat pads under the skin also become thinner with time. You may notice:

  • Flattening of the cheeks
  • Deepening of parentheses lines (laugh lines or nasolabial folds)
  • Thinning of lips
  • Hollows under the eyes (tear troughs)

Patient Testimonial Dermal Fillers at Face Forward

Nancy shares her experience with lip fillers at Face Forward Medical Aesthetics in Lexington, MA.

What are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers help to diminish facial lines and restore natural-looking volume and fullness in the face. A range of dermal filler formulations allows for their use to solve an array of aesthetic concerns: smoothing and filling wrinkles, plumping the lips, restoring facial volume, and combating skin dehydration.

Many fillers are made with hyaluronic acid (HA), a substance that is found naturally in the skin.  In fact, one of the key factors distinguishing youthful skin is its high moisture content, and HA is the main molecule responsible for retaining water in the skin. As HA declines with age, facial volume is lost.

How Do Fillers Work?

Dermal fillers are injectable gels that are used to fill wrinkles to make them less visible, create volume in parts of the face, plump lips, and create natural contours where desired. Because the filler is being injected directly into the target area, results can be seen instantly. Natural results can be achieved with no effect on facial expressions.

What are the Aesthetic Benefits of Dermal Fillers in Lexington, MA?

Fillers have multiple potential applications. The most common are:

  • Adding volume and smoothing out the deep creases that run from the nose to the mouth (called nasolabial folds, laugh lines, or parentheses lines).
  • Plumping thin lips and smoothing out vertical lines around the edges of the lips.
  • Augmenting cheeks to enhance their shape, often restoring youthful fullness.
  • Filling out depressions (hollows) under the eyes called tear troughs and reducing the appearance of dark circles.
  • Redefining the jawline.
  • Making indented scars from acne or chickenpox less apparent by lifting them to be more even with surrounding skin.
  • Increasing volume to fill out gauntness in the lower cheek or temple areas. Volume loss most often occurs due to fat pads shifting beneath the surface of the skin.

I’ve Heard…

The most common misconception about fillers is that the results won’t look natural. If done properly, your outcome should be subtle and organic-looking. You should look rejuvenated, not over-filled. A great New York Times article recently reviewed the use of fillers under the eyes and in the temples and is worth a read!

What Can I Expect During Treatment?

At Face Forward Medical Aesthetics, patients receive among the best dermal filler treatment in Lexington, MA, and beyond. First, the area will be cleaned to remove all bacteria, and you may be given a topical anesthetic to numb the skin prior to injection. Many filler products also contain lidocaine, a mild anesthetic, which is intended to help minimize discomfort during and after your treatment. Your provider will then strategically inject a precise amount of filler beneath the skin.

Depending on the product and the areas treated, you should see noticeable results immediately after receiving filler injections. Some patients experience mild bruising and swelling, but these symptoms are temporary and should subside over the days following treatment. You will be able to go back to your normal activities right away, but your provider may ask you to take the day off from exercise or other strenuous activities

When can I expect results?

Some people may begin to notice results within 24-48 hours. The full effect may be realized within 1-2 weeks, with a visible smoothing of wrinkles in problem areas.

How long do fillers last?

Results last from 2 months to 2 years, depending on the type of filler. However, specific outcomes can be “reversed” if needed by injecting a substance called hyaluronidase.

Do fillers have side effects?

Overall, the side effects of injectables are relatively minor (one of the many reasons injectables have become so popular). Common filler-related side effects include bruising, swelling, redness, or tenderness around the injection sites, all of which will resolve after a few days to a week.

What is the downtime?

Have a big event planned? Set aside a full recovery week before attending.

Are fillers the same as BOTOX?

No, fillers are not the same as BOTOX, but they frequently complement each other. Check out our blog on this very popular question! Dermal fillers, like BOTOX, are used to prevent or eliminate hallmarks of facial aging. The primary difference between the two is that BOTOX reduces the activity of muscles in the face that cause wrinkles, while facial fillers fill the trouble areas and also help to stimulate collagen growth, plumping, and lifting age-depleted contours.
