What is Melasma?

Melasma is a common condition causing hyperpigmentation of the skin, affecting areas of the face that are more exposed to ultraviolet (UV) sun rays. Women with darker skin tones are more susceptible to developing melasma. In 1 out of every 4 cases, melasma occurs during pregnancy, and female hormones play a role in its development. Melasma gets its name from the increased melanin pigment deposited in all layers of the skin.
