As we age, the cumulative effects of sun exposure, gravity, and repetitive muscle contractions cause fine lines and wrinkles to form in the skin. When we’re young, there’s enough collagen and elasticity for those wrinkles to be visible only during muscle contraction. As a normal consequence of the aging process, eventually those fine lines and wrinkles are visible even when the face is at rest. Cosmetic treatments now exist that can soften specific facial muscles to promote a youthful appearance. At Face Forward Medical Aesthetics we use Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin to relax the muscles that cause fine lines and wrinkles, giving you a refreshed, youthful appearance, and preventing the progression of wrinkle formation.
WHAT IS BOTOX?
BOTOX® Cosmetic is an injectable agent that temporarily improve the appearance of both moderate to severe frown lines between the brows, and crow’s feet lines in adults.
How does botox work?
Emotional facial expressions such as smiling, laughing and frowning create furrows or wrinkles in the skin over time. A muscle can only contract when a nerve signal reaches that muscle. Botox is injected by a licensed practitioner locally into specific muscles, temporarily blocking that nerve signal, preventing contraction of the specific targeted muscle.
IS BOTOX THE ONLY NEUROTOXIN?
No, other formulations include:
* Xeomin (incobotulinum toxin A)
* Dysport (abobotulinum toxin A)
Misconceptions about botox are common, including botox being “toxic”, absorbed into the bloodstream, giving a “frozen” look, among other myths. When injected by a licensed, experienced practitioner, botox only has an effect locally where injected, and has a long history with a safe track record. It does not build up in the body over time, and is not the same as Botulism (food poisoning). If you have other concerns, Jill Canes would be happy to discuss them with you during your consultation. For more reading, a great article was featured 10/2018 in the New York Times about Botox applications in the brow, and around the eyes.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT DURING TREATMENT?
Multiple small injections of Botox® are injected directly into the targeted muscle using a fine needle to address wrinkles, forehead lines (frown lines), eleven lines (between your eyes, also called glabellar lines), crow’s feet, wrinkles around the upper lip, bunny lines (wrinkles on the upper nose). Most describe the treatment as ‘slightly uncomfortable’ and the procedure lasts <10 minutes.
WHEN CAN I EXPECT RESULTS?
Some people may begin to notice results within 24-48 hours. The full effect may be realized within 1-2 weeks, a visible smoothing of wrinkles in problem areas.
HOW LONG DOES BOTOX LAST?
Results can last up to 4 months.
DOES BOTOX HAVE SIDE EFFECTS?
The majority of clients experience no pain or side effects. A small number get a minor headache after the treatment, typically eased with mild pain killer. You may experience some redness or swelling, and in some cases some slight temporary bruising. Avoiding alcohol and/or NSAIDS 24 hours prior to your procedure can decrease your chances of experiencing these effects. Remaining upright for 4 hours following injections is advised.
WHAT IS THE DOWNTIME?
There is no downtime after Botox treatment.
IS BOTOX USED FOR ANYTHING ELSE?
Yes, Botox is used for excessive underarm sweating, called hyperhidrosis.
IS BOTOX ONLY FOR WOMEN?
No! Botox is becoming increasingly popular for men, and is FDA approved to treat all appropriate adults. In clinical studies for moderate to severe frown lines and crow’s feet, 17.5% and about 12%, respectively, of patients treated with BOTOX® Cosmetic were men.
